Dental Teeth Cleanings
The foundation for our teeth is the supporting structures, specifically the gums and bone. Good oral care at home and professional teeth cleanings in Torrance are the building blocks for your overall health. Poor oral hygiene has been linked to a range of health conditions such as heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, and even diabetes.
What Happens During a Regular Teeth Cleaning?
At Infinite Smiles, the goal of periodontal treatment is to thoroughly clean the pockets around teeth by removing tartar and plaque buildup. Plaque is a storehouse of bacteria that can damage your teeth, lead to bone loss, tooth loss as well as causing other health conditions when it enters the bloodstream.
At your cleaning appointments, the hygienist will use a Piezo ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments to remove plaque, calculus, and stains. Our hygienist will then rinse the gumline with an antiseptic medication to destroy the bacteria that cause gum disease and to reduce the redness of your gums. We will perform an oral cancer screening exam at your hygiene appointment and will recommend certain oral hygiene tools that may be beneficial to your health. A routine dental cleaning is recommended every 3-6 months.
What Is a Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)?
Dr. Boulos may recommend a deep cleaning when periodontal (gum) disease is present. If left unchecked, periodontal disease can damage your bone and cause you to lose your teeth. You may need more than one appointment to complete this procedure.
Our hygienist will apply local anesthesia to the area to be treated in order to avoid pain and discomfort during the procedure. A Piezo scaler, as well as hand instruments, is used to remove all tartar and calculus present under the gums and around the tooth. We finish with smoothing out the root surface to prevent further plaque buildup. Following the deep cleaning, you can expect less redness and swelling of your gums.
The results of your periodontal therapy depend on your adherence to follow-up appointments, home care, and personal habits, such as smoking and a poor diet. Smoking and tobacco use weakens your immune system and can make it more difficult to heal after scaling and root planing.
Dr. Boulos will monitor your response to the periodontal therapy in the South Bay and she will be happy to review any and all recommendations with you.
